How to Get a Natural Tan with Non-toxic, Certified Organic Ingredients

Goal: bronzed bombshell.

Spring weather means it’s time to find any excuse possible to enjoy the sunshine—whether by frolicking in the ocean, enjoying margaritas by the pool or dining alfresco. It’s the perfect season for flirty floral dresses, strappy sandals and sun-kissed skin!

But, with one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, recent studies show that Australians should think twice before turning to the sun to get a golden glow. Almost half of all Aussie adults hold the misguided belief that a tan is healthy. According to Cancer Council Australia, a true tan is actually a sign of skin cells in trauma. Exposure to enough UV radiation can damage your skin and increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

Did you know?

Approximately, 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70?

So how do you get that stunning, just-got-back-from-a-tropical-vacay look without the health risks?

Of course, there’s always self-tanner. All the glow without the sun exposure—sounds like a no-brainer, right? Well, yes, BUT…

Many of the off-the-shelf products available at your local supermarket or chemist are full of harmful chemicals and toxic ingredients. Not to mention the crappy formulations!

Find us someone who’s successfully applied their fake tan without streaks, orange stains, bad smells and sticky body parts, and we’ll be *seriously* impressed.

That’s why our certified organic, non-toxic self-tanners are so magical!

They’re easy to apply, require zero sunlight and contain velvety soft ingredients that are kind to your skin. You can get a gorgeous, deep, natural tan that’s long-lasting, doesn't go patchy, and contains no toxic ingredients.

Here are just a few reasons why we think organic self-tanning lotion delivers a superior natural tan:

- Aloe Vera

- Green tea

- Camellia flower

- Jojoba

- Frangipani flower

- Shea tree

- Cacao fruit

- Kakadu plum

- Linseed

- Grapes

- Coconut

- Sunflower

1. No hidden nasties

Organic self-tanners are gentler on your skin because they don’t contain any synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, parabens and nasty odours. Choosing natural and organic self-tanning lotions means that you not only get flawless, sun-kissed skin, but also all the benefits of the nourishing plant extracts while your tan develops.

For example, our Dr Organic Self Tan Mousse and Wotnot Self Tan Lotion contain amazing plant extracts for sensitive skin like:

Thanks to these natural, moisturising ingredients your skin won’t feel flaky or dry. The level of hydration provided by our organic self-tanners means less skin irritation after the tan is applied. Rather than walking out of your bathroom feeling sticky, itchy and pore-clogged, you’ll leave feeling hydrated and happy—no greasy break-outs here!

2. Say buh-bye to the stink!

There’s nothing worse than applying a self-tanning lotion that stinks up your entire house. Except for maybe waiting up to 8 hours before you can wash off the smell! Conventional tanning products contain chemicals that have an unpleasant odour. Some women have even described the smell of conventional fake tan like burnt skin, pee and bad BO (ew, no thank you!). Understandably, this funky smell can make you feel self-conscious and reluctant to leave the house.

Organic tanning lotions, on the other hand, are often the opposite. Because of the reduced amount of chemicals and their natural, plant-based ingredients, they can actually smell lovely! For example, our Dr Organic Self Tan Mousse smells like light cinnamon, so you can go about your day with confidence and ease.

3. Natural, golden colour

No one wants to look like an orange Oompa Loompa straight out of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. And it’s no secret that conventional tanning products have a pretty bad record when it comes to colour. Thankfully, our organic products offer a beautiful, believable natural tan that fades gradually over time. We just love the way the golden colour lasts, even with a busy lifestyle!

Did you know?

Having a fake tan does not protect your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. SPF is still essential!

How to apply your organic tan for flawless, natural results:

Step One:

24-hr hours before tanning, prepare your skin. Shave or wax your hair and buff away any dead skin cells with a natural exfoliant. We love the Byron Bay Coffee Scrub.

Step Two:

Apply a thin layer of moisturiser to your eyebrows, lips, elbows, knees and tops of feet ten minutes prior to self-tanning. Then, pump your self-tanning lotion onto an application mitt to keep your hands clean. This Wotnot Body Exfoliating Mitt is the perfect choice for a streak-free tan. Apply the tan to your body in circular motions.

To achieve a super rich tan you can do a double coat, but it’s best to leave a day in between applications to allow the first application to finish working on your skin.

Step Three:

Leave your tan on for as long as you would like! We suggest 1-4 hours for a light tan and up to 8 hours for a deep tan. You can even apply your tanning lotion before bed and leave it on all night. After your preferred time, just rinse in the shower and pat your skin dry before heading out for the day. And voilà! Your skin is now flawlessly sun-kissed and oh-so golden. Flaunt it, girl!
